In What Situations Can Light Point Web Be Used
We have designed Light Point Web to be easy to use. Our goal is for users to install it and use it everyday for all their browsing needs. However, in some cases it may not make sense for some users. This article takes a look at some other ways you can use Light Point Web.
Always On
This is the default and simplest use case of Light Point Web. It is installed and used for all browsing. It would only be turned off when you explicitly want to give a website access to your computer, or to bypass one of our temporary unsupported operations.
Protected Exploration
If a user wants to use Light Point Web only for protected exploration, he would configure Light Point Web to be off by default. The user would then ONLY view sites he felt he could trust such as Google or Facebook. But if there were any links away from these sites that the user wanted to see, he would open just those links in Light Point Web.
For another example, when someone makes a comment on this site’s blog, it must be moderated by one of us before it is shown to other site visitors. Often these comments contain a link to the poster’s website. And very often we have no idea what this website is. We will browse to this site only in Light Point Web to try to determine if it is a respectable site before allowing it on our site.
While this tactic is safer than not using Light Point Web at all, you must be careful about your choice of trusted sites. Even well known legitimate sites can get hacked so that malware can be stealthily injected into the pages. Also, third-party ads that are shown on these sites have been known to occasionally contain malware.
Sensitive vs Nonsensitive Activities
Another tactic is to try and segment your browsing into things that are very sensitive and everything else. Some users will feel better by doing the sensitive browsing outside of Light Point Web so that this sensitive activity is not performed on our servers. Nonsensitive browsing could then still be done through Light Point Web.
For example, a user could use Light Point Web for their everyday browsing. This protects their computer from getting infected from any of the sites they visit. Then if the user wanted to do something very sensitive, such as logging into their bank website, they would do this outside of Light Point Web.
Because they use Light Point Web most of the time, they can have a higher confidence that their own computer can be used for such sensitive activities. In addition, the possibility of getting malware from a banking site is very small.
Only Highest Risk
Another possibility is that a user may only use Light Point Web for only the highest risk sites. Perhaps you are a researcher who often has to look at websites based in foreign countries. Browsing to these sites is EXTREMELY dangerous and should never be done directly from a users computer without an advanced browser security product like Light Point Web.
Mix and Match
You can adapt your browsing to any of these tactics at any time. Light Point Web can be turned on and off with a click of the mouse, and on a tab by tab basis. You can have a tab using Light Point Web running right beside one that is not using Light Point Web.
